The Wine

The Barossa has built an enviable reputation forged on the back of this workhorse variety and the 2016 season presented us with superb conditions to highlight all that is great about the grape. January rains set things up nicely and the season progressed evenly with no heatwave conditions with the resulting wines showing excellent colour and rich aroma and flavour profiles. In short, it was a good’un. We are very lucky here in the Barossa. To be honest it is a pretty straight forward place to grow grapes and make wine. Some of the oldest vines in the world, a great climate for viticulture with little disease pressure certainly make our job easier and that job is to guide the grapes on their journey from fermentation to bottle so the finished wine reflects both our region and the preceding growing season. Classic Barossa aromas of dark plum, blackberry and macerated summer berry fruits literally spill out of the glass here. Hints of Asian spice, licorice, earth, roasting meats, purple flowers, berry flan and gently spiced oak add to the wines aromatic complexity. Plenty of texture and attitude on the palate with a solid wall of ripe, concentrated black fruits. Flavours of satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry all coming into play. There is a lovely flow to the fruit over the mid-palate with the rich fruit supported by hints of abundant spice, dark chocolate, earth and subtle oak notes. A curtain of ripe, chalky tannin provides a supportive frame for the fruit to hang off and the wine trails off persistently with flavours of opulent black fruits and Asian spice.
The Winemaking
All vineyards for this blend were picked and destemmed in February/ March. Wild fermented in open fermeters for an average of fourteen days on skins prior to gentle basket pressing. The parcels of wines then spent fifteen months maturing in 100% seasoned French oak prior to blending. This wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Vineyard
A blend of vineyards ranging from Marananga , Stonewell, Greenock and the YP Estate which is in the Valley Floor. Vines ranging from 10 – 50 year old cropped at slightly higher than normal levels to achieve a softer, fruit driven style of wine with keeping the alcohol at a reasonable level.
