Chateau Les Grands Marecheaux 2015
Château Massereau, situated at Barsac at about 30 kilometers from Bordeaux, was built in the 16th century and acquired by the Chaigneau family in 2000. The estate extends over 19 hectares, 10 planted (6 600 – 7 000 plants/hectare) in the Barsac, Graves and Bordeaux Superieur appellations.
Jean-François, who chose by passion to become a wine-maker, and Philippe, his brother, sales manager, have taken on a real challenge. Quality and authenticity are the key-words of the estate to give birth to fine, natural, authentic artisan wines.
Extreme vine-growing and wine-making methods, with respect of the terroir, of the vines, of the grapes on the 3 terroirs of Barsac, Graves and Bordeaux Superieur : ploughing (sometimes with horses) (no chemical weeding), disbudding, thinning out of leaves, selection of bunches as well as the harvest are manual and regarding the grapes of Barsac, they are pressed in an old wood press operated manually.
No chaptalisation, no acidification, no filtration, no fining, no wine-making additives, use of a very small quantity of SO² (total SO² from 10 to 35 mg/l), no manipulation, in order to offer natural wines and allow the terroirs to express their typical qualities.
Minnow Creek The Black Minnow Sangiovese Cabernet 2018 Showing a generous entry of bright red fruits leading to an intense burst of deep vibrant dark cherry fruits with a touch of typical savouriness from the Sangiovese. The mid palate shows a rich complexity of red and black fruits derived from the Cabernet component.The back palate combines an intense array of vibrant complex berry flavours and allspice finishing with a delightful fine tannin structure of great length.
Cirillo Shiraz 2018 – made with grapes sourced from high altitude vines from Steingarten on the border of Barossa and Eden Valley ranges.
With open fermentation, natural yeast , basket pressed and then matured in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months.
The colour is dark, ink-like in appearance. It displays earthy spice driven aromas, with hints of berry fruits. Soft and delicate on the palate, typical of shiraz from this region.
It carries mid-palate weight, with a lengthy finish that lingers in the mouth for some time. This wine can be enjoyed now or over the next decade or two.
Tim Smith Bugalugs Shiraz 2019. This features aromas of blue and black fruit, a hint of spice and a slippery, glossy palate packed with flavour. It’s Barossa to its core. But there’s freshness here too, a cherry pip acidity and some peppery, earthy characters through the finish.
Eldorado Road Quasimodo 2017.
To understand Quasimodo you must venture beyond the surface and explore the inner soul. As individual varietal wines they can struggle for love but when blended together they can sing, shine and bring harmony.
Quasimodo is a unique Australian blend of Nero d’Avola, Shiraz & Durif sourced from the regions of Eldorado and Rutherglen. It’s an amalgam of flavour and colour culminating in a complex rewarding wine.
Brought together from many different ferments with a goal of creating an affable blend built on the of layers flavours these three distinct varieties bring. Nero d’Avola is grown in our home vineyard and brings the vitality and bright red fruits. The Shiraz comes from a vineyard a short 5 minute drive down a dirt track from our winery perched amongst the boulders of a granite outcrop. This is a painfully low cropping vineyard resulting depth of flavour not attainable from higher yielding vineyards, this component fleshes out the mid palate. The final piece in the puzzle is Rutherglen Durif, dark and brooding the addition of just 15% gives the wine backbone and a subtle lick of tannin through the back palate without overpowering this medium bodied blend. Lightly filtered then bottled August 2017.
Maxwell Little Demon Cabernet Merlot 2018 Shows fresh fruit; plum, blackberry, and cherries. Well balanced tannin with subtle vanilla oak create a soft and round finish. The Cabernet flavours really dominate in this wine but the softness of the Merlot rounds off the palate creating a well-balanced wine.
Plantagenet Aquitaine Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Intense cassis and dried floral aromas. With a dense vibrant core of berry fruit on the palate and hints of fresh tobacco and subtle earthy undertones. A very approachable, youthful Cabernet with potential to age.
Plantagenet’s total 126 hectares of vineyard have been carved out of the region’s distinctive Marri soils named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum trees that grow here. The soils are ironstone gravelly loams over a base of clay, sand or the ironstone rock. The vineyards sites are selected where drainage is good enabling control over vine vigour, one of the most important determinents of fruit quality.The combination of soils, landforms and climate – or terroir – creates wines of rare distinction and quality.
Tim Smith Mataro Grenache Shiraz 2019 Discovering more old vine mataro and grenache in the ‘gardens’ of Tim Smith’s Barossa growers, provides him the perfect opportunity to craft a blend that is quite aromatic and in the ‘Rhone Style’ that he loves. Retaining all the plush palate weight is the hallmark of this wine, which is always purposefully mataro dominant. This allows the mataro fruit, which has a similar tannin structure as shiraz, to be ready to drink upon release as well as having some serious cellaring potential.
Irvine Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a fruit bowl of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries backed by cedar spice, black pepper and a savory streak. The savoriness continues on the palate in the form of fine-grained tannins that hold all that plump fruit in place. A plush but balanced expression of the Eden Valley.
The Octogenarian Grenache 2016 Ruby red in the glass with cranberry, plum, spice and vanillin oak aromas. On the palate, it’s a rich and full-bodied Grenache with juicy raspberry and plum core depth, savoury tannin foundation a crisp line of acidity and balanced oak.
Ministry Of Clouds Kintsugi GSM 2015 – A Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz and Cinsault blend (80/10/5/5), the Kintsugi is vintage dependent. Such a pretty wine, it has a softly-softly delivery as it caresses the mouth. Red berry fruit up front with peppermint very much relaxing out the back. Lighter than expected in the mouth, a gentle rub of earthiness gets me further enthused. Another whiff and purple flowers and blueberries waft on by. A minerally feel is apparent too along with some dried herbs for good measure. What sets this wine apart is the absolute marriage of all parts creating a seamless result. It’s hard not to be in love. Delightful.
Drink now to eight years.
