The Churinga vineyard was first planted in 1930 and those gnarly old Grenache vines are still producing some wonderful fruit on the property today. Consisting of Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Mataro, the majority of vines were traditionally planted on the contour in 1930 and 1954. How lucky I am to work with beautiful old vine grapes.
Owned by the Kyros family since 2003, Churinga is now managed by local winegrower Leon Schram and the site is farmed adopting sustainable management techniques, including biodynamic 500 preparation, to assist with soil and vine health.
Churinga has a rich red loam soil overlying slate and my dry grown vines are shoot thinned, hand pruned and hand picked to ensure the best possible fruit selection each season.
From this vineyard I create my individual vineyard Churinga Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as my 5452 red blend. It’s a little piece of history from Watervale.
