Great Southern Vineyards & Wineries
Howard Park Wines first began in the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. Since then, we have created an experience for our visitors which is truly unique, and unlike any other offered by wineries in the region.

Home to the vineyards that produce our flagship Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon and Mount Barker Riesling, Howard Park’s viticultural and winemaking teams are experts in the unique characteristics specific to the Great Southern region. Comprised of winding coastlines and lush farming areas, the region offers the charm of the countryside with the relaxation of stunning seaside towns.

The Great Southern spans 150 x 100 km and includes 5 sub-regions, Albany, Mt Barker, Denmark, Porongurup and Frankland River. It is Australia’s largest wine region, so it should come as no surprise that the vineyards display much variety within their overall terroir.

It is Western Australia’s coolest grape growing area, with a maritime influence similar to that of Margaret River, though with less rainfall per year. Stand out varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Much older than any of the Margaret River wineries however, the first official records of grape growing in the Great Southern began in 1859, though the first real commercial vine plantings didn’t occur until 1930, by horticulturist Bill Jamieson. His efforts were affirmed by University of California Professor Harold Olmo in 1955.

Howard Park owns two vineyards within the Mount Barker sub-region, Abercrombie and Mount Barrow, and has managed a further vineyard in the Porongurup sub-region for just under a decade, Gibraltar Rock.
