In the glass, the 2013 Equinoxe Crozes Hermitage has a bright ruby robe. There are pronounced aromas of black fruit fresh, violet, minerals and smoked peppery spice, with a hint of bacon smoked in retro-olfaction. The wine is juicy, penetrating and well-focused, offering dynamic flavors of blackberry and bitter cherry increase with aeration. This culminates in a spicy wine finale, concentrated and persistent, supported by refined tannins.

Walsh & Sons Felix Syrah 2016. We have gone for a new take on an old Australian Classic … Syrah. Our wines are designed to have edgy bits because we think its these differences that define us. To that end it’s not fined or filtered. We choose family names from our younger generation because our hopes lie with them and it seems only right that wine with developing personalities have a name to match. This wine has green, white and black pepper characteristics.
KT Churinga Shiraz 2013. The Churinga vineyard shiraz was first planted in 1954 and this wine was lovingly created from dry grown vines planted on rich loam and slate soil, which contributes to its fine tannin structure and vibrant fruit. In the creation I’ve adopted traditional techniques of open fermentation and basket pressing. Hand picked fruit was carefully selected and fermented naturally on skins with approx 30% whole bunch fruit and a small amount of cofermented Riesling as a natural acid addition. Gentle hand plunging of the ferment and minimal working has produced a shiraz with rich fruit concentration and finely grained velvet tannins. Basket pressed, the wine was matured in 100% French oak and a mix of 3 and 4 year old French oak barriques to ensure that the fruit is the defining feature.
Mr Barval Cabernet Merlot 2017 A restrained yet complex nose displaying a wonderful mix of cassis, black berry, currant, and plum, hints of spicey oak and a typically delicate Margaret River savoury dried kelp note. Medium to full bodied with plenty of acid to lift the palate and balance the autumn fruit bowl of dark and red berries and fruits. The youthful tannins are nutty, fine and dry and complete the well structured palate to perfection. This wine is already showing great depth and complexity in youth and I feel it has great potential to age and develop for at least 15 years.
Marq DNA Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Lifted aroma of blueberry, black currant and chocolate mint with hints of cedary oak and signature Margaret River tomato leaf.
A full bodied wine with a rich juicy palate and abundant fine velvety tannins. It has intense red and black fruits with a background of tasty oak and hints of black jub and mocha.
Craiglee Cabernet Sauvignon 2015. A sensational, medium-bodied cabernet sauvignon loaded with fragrant red and ripe blackberry fruits. It builds with savoury, cedary notes, supple velvety tannins and subtle oak that brings this wine together beautifully and to a long finish. Top stuff. All Craiglee wines are made from estate grown fruit, handpicked from vines that are hand pruned and carefully tended here on our family farm.
The Octogenarian Grenache 2016 Ruby red in the glass with cranberry, plum, spice and vanillin oak aromas. On the palate, it’s a rich and full-bodied Grenache with juicy raspberry and plum core depth, savoury tannin foundation a crisp line of acidity and balanced oak.
Chard Farm River Run Pinot Noir 2018 . Aromas of bright cherry and berry fruits lightly spiced with a lingering floral and herbal perfume. Wonderfully supple and silky on the palate, highlighting the ripe cherry, red berry and spice flavours, finishing with superb balance and drinkability.
Clairault Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. Dark purple. Fragrant nose of grape skins, menthol and violets. Velvety texture, intense but not overbearing, notes of mint, menthol, eucalyptus and violets around a core of purple fruits, somewhat monotonous, long finish.
The fruit was hand-picked, 100% de-stemmed and mechanically berry-sorted, with only 50% of that crushed. 5 day cold soak at approximately 10 degrees. The wild fermentation is encouraged as the tank is warmed to approximately 20 degrees. We only plunge during the fermentation. No pressings are used. We drain off the wine to barrel and keep it on yeast lees for the entire 10 months of maturation, using only our best 1 and 2 year-old French oak. Individual barrels are chosen that display the pedigree of the deep sand, with intense fragrance juxtaposed with intense fruit expression and gritty long tannin structure. Not Fined. Bottled February 2015. Certified Biodynamic.
Castelli Shiraz 2016 is a classic example of Great Southern Shiraz . Aromas of
blackberries, mulberries, plum pudding and intense spices with hints of star anise and chocolate fudge. The full-bodied palate builds to a crescendo before finishing with sweet, rounded tannins that are perfectly integrated with savoury French oak. The intensity of flavour and complex structural components in the wine can only be achieved from fully ripened Cool Climate fruit. This wine will be able to be confidently cellared over the next 7-10 years.
Chateau Mont-Redon Chateauneuf du Pape 2016. Inky hue violet deep violet rim. Intense nose with red fruit aromas combined to complex smokiness. Palate with tight and focused tannins. Enjoyable now but require few years of bottle maturation to fully integrate aging notes. Very elegant and refined finish.
Johann Michel Cornas 2016 – Whiffs of truffle, leather and violet introduce this deft, nuanced Syrah. Blackberry and plum flavors are intensely ripe but muted by savory notes of spice and earth. Freshly balanced and supple on the palate, it finishes with a firm, penetrating grip of tannins. Lovely already it should soften and meld from 2021 and continue to improve through 2030. ANNA LEE C.
