Castelli Riesling 2018

Castelli Riesling 2018 Western Australia Great Southern

$22.35

Castelli Riesling 2018 . This wine is the essence of what the Great Southern has to offer for Riesling. Sourced from four individual sub-regions of the Great Southern where each plays a role in bringing different characters to the overall wine. The lifted floral and rose petal aromas (essence of Mount Barker) are perfectly balanced on a central citrus/lime core (Albany, Porongurup influence) with talcy acidity and textural mid-palate weight (Frankland River). There are some very attractive nuances of perfumed stone fruit and crushed wildflowers. Typical of Great Southern Rieslings, the wine is very attractive in its youth but the biggest smiles will be with those who have the patience to cellar for 10-15 years.

The quaint country village of San Giorgio a Liri, in Italy’s Lazio region, was Sam and Maria Castelli’s birthplace.

It’s a farming village that is home to many grain, corn and sunflower producers, but it was in the region’s vineyards that the Castelli family’s passion for wine developed.

In 2004, the Castelli’s dream of a family-owned winery became a reality when, upon the slopes of Mt Shadforth, the Castelli Estate property was purchased – A 120 acre farm which overlooks Wilson’s Inlet, Mt. Lindesay and the lush countryside around Denmark.

The property was acquired with a semi-complete winery which, with the family’s extensive construction and engineering experience, was later completed in 2006. With a strong commitment to quality, the next twelve months were spent putting together a highly talented winemaking team.

The Castelli family enticed winemaker Mike Garland to come on board in what were the beginnings of one of today’s most promising Western Australian boutique wine brands. Through our dedicated winemaking team’s extensive experience, the sourcing of the state’s best fruit and the family’s passion and commitment to quality, Castelli Estate’s wines hold the promise of something special.

Mike Garland – Chief Winemaker
Fuelled by a passion for cool climate wine styles, Mike and his wife, Julie, made the move in 1996 to Mount Barker in the Great Southern where they purchased an established mature vineyard. Mike studied Wine Science at Charles Sturt University and became a strong regional ambassador, working initially for Plantagenet Wines and then developing a vibrant contract winemaking facility (along with being a part time house builder and having 3 children). This gave a solid foundation in all aspects of the wine industry, from viticulture, marketing, logistics management and most importantly his main passion, winemaking. Mike also gained considerable experience in the Mittlerhein, Germany to expand on his fascination with Germanic style Rieslings. The opportunity to head up the Castelli Winery at Mount Shadforth was too good to refuse and in 2007 Mike helped the Castelli family’s winery dream become a reality. The central driving force behind Mike’s winemaking philosophy is that it is always about balance and structure – something that can only be truly achieved from cool climate viticulture.
