Description

Bannockburn 1314ad Blanc 2019

Bannockburn 1314ad Blanc 2019 combines the rich, flavoursome Chardonnay from the Bannockburn vineyard with a splash of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The Sauvignon brings a touch of herbaceousness to the wine, tempering the golden peachy tones of the Chardonnay. And the Riesling brings a fresh, bracing acidity that makes the wine cut through the mouth at breakneck speed.

A one-off blend of 50% Chardonnay predominantly sourced from 1997 and 2016 plantings; 41% Sauvignon Blanc primarily from a 1996 planting, with a parcel of fruit from an older block making the difference; and 9% Riesling from 1976 and 2015 plantings. All grown on dark clay and loam over weathered basalt and limestone. Here, each variety was vinified separately before blending: the Chardonnay underwent full malo in French oak hogsheads and the Sauvignon Blanc was partly fermented on skins, while the Riesling was fermented in temperature-controlled tank. Taken together, the result, as you could imagine, is multidimensional; there’s drive, texture and tension all at once. A brilliant “bistro lunch wine” just as Bannockburn intended.

About Bannockburn

For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery’s unique terroir.

Originally planted by the legendary Gary Farr, the wines that comes from this unique vineyard in Geelong show a rare sense of place. The ancient riverbed soils impart a distinct saline character and a power which makes the wines from this place immediately identifiable.

With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn’s long history has commenced.

New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.

How Bannockburn Began

Stuart Hooper was a successful businessman with a passion for everything about wine. He envisioned creating a vineyard that would produce Australian wine of a quality to emulate the great regions of France.

In the early 1970’s Stuart selected a plot of land in the Moorabool Valley near the township of Bannockburn. A promising site with the desirable soil composition consistent with quality viticulture and a rich history of premium wine grape production dating back to the 1870’s. The initial plantings were shiraz vines. Before long, more land was acquired, more vines and varieties planted – the story had begun.

A major contribution to the success of Bannockburn Vineyards was the strong foundation Stuart provided through his purist, uncompromising approach when he established the vineyard and winery. Everything was done with a commitment to producing quality wine.

Although Stuart has since passed, Bannockburn Vineyards remains in the Hooper family, with his daughters as custodians to ensure his philosophy is preserved, providing the cornerstone of all that we do at Bannockburn today.

Viticultural Manager for over 30 years, Lucas Grigsby takes personal pride tending to the vineyards with a belief in organic farming practices to maintain the health of the soils and vines. In the winery, Matt Holmes’s approach is to take a step back and allow the healthy, well-balanced fruit flavours to develop into wines with minimal additions and low intervention.

We continue to benefit from the foresight shown by Stuart Hooper; in the 1970s and 1980s when the Australian wine industry firmly had Bordeaux as the reference point, Stuart planted Burgundian varieties. Our Serré vineyard is now the site of Australia’s oldest close-planted Pinot Noir vines.
