About the domain
Respecting a transmission from father to son, the Clapes produce elegant wines that stand out as essential references in the Cornas vineyard. Today it is Pierre Clape, accompanied by his son Olivier, who work these 5 hectares organized in terraces on granite hillsides. The terroir is difficult because it cannot be mechanized, natural slopes of up to 50-60%. The wine making is done in a traditional way, according to a plot logic and respecting the age of each vine, all in a spirit as interventionist as possible.
About the cuvée Beautiful expression of the young Syrahs of the domain, the Renaissance cuvée thus reveals an intense garnet color and a complex bouquet. Fruity, ripe, empyreumatic, floral and spicy notes coat a mouth with a delicate tannin grain. Fresh and long, the palate allows pretty complex and refined gastronomic accords. Stuffed quail, duck breast with grapes, ravioli with truffles will honor him. To do this, the estate has vinified its syrah in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts. A few pumping-over allowed controlled oxygenation of the wine before it was aged in old vats.
Johann Michel Cornas 2016 France
Johann Michel Cornas 2016 FranceJohann Michel Cornas 2016 – Whiffs of truffle, leather and violet introduce this deft, nuanced Syrah. Blackberry and plum flavors are intensely ripe but muted by savory notes of spice and earth. Freshly balanced and supple on the palate, it finishes with a firm, penetrating grip of tannins. Lovely already it should soften and meld from 2021 and continue to improve through 2030. ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA
